One of the subjects we might get questions about at the Animal Clinic of Honolulu is kennel cough. What is kennel cough? What can be done about it and can a veterinarian do to help?
What Is Kennel Cough?
Kennel cough is a more generic name for what is technically called canine infectious tracheobronchitis. It is a respiratory illness in dogs that is contagious. It is often spread where dogs gather such as boarding kennels, dog parks, dog shows, and elsewhere.
What Are Symptoms of Kennel Cough?
Kennel cough is usually accompanied by a persistent dry cough, sneezing, and a runny nose. Some dogs may experience a fever. The harsh cough can be particularly disturbing for owners.
Diagnosis and Treatment
Your dog should be first properly diagnosed. A veterinarian with us at the Animal Clinic of Honolulu can help. Once properly diagnosed and the severity of the cough determined, appropriate treatment can begin.
Kennel cough is generally not considered serious or life-threatening in healthy adult dogs. It can, however, have more serious impacts on puppies and older dogs.
While in some cases, kennel cough may dissipate on its own, if your pet has some other underlying problem or an immune deficiency, it can lead to more serious problems.
For your peace of mind and the dog's health, it is far better to have a diagnosis and treatment plan. This may also be an opportunity for an overall checkup if your pet doesn't get in for regularly scheduled visits.
