Animal stem cell therapy is a relatively new veterinary procedure that is only being offered by us at Animal Clinic of Honolulu on the island of Oahu, HI. Unfortunately, since this is not a service that is not offered by other veterinarian offices, many people are unfamiliar with what it is. Here are a couple of the questions you may have and the answers.
What is Animal Stem Cell Therapy?
Stem cell therapy has proven to be very successful in treating conditions in human beings. This is because stem cells can form any type of cell that is required. This allows these cells to be generated into various parts of the body and begin to take on the make-up in that area, regenerating tissue. But humans are not the only ones who can benefit from this; pets can as well.
Animal stem cell therapy involves injecting stem cells that are found in umbilical cord blood, bone marrow or fat from an animal that is the same species as your pet. The stems cells are then injected into a diseased area, where cells are not properly working.
When is Animal Stem Cell Therapy Used?
Currently, stem therapy is most commonly used to treat injuries and diseases that affect bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, and the spinal cord region in cats, dogs, and horses. The therapy is most effective when the treatment is administered quickly after an injury has occurred or a condition begins to develop. As this technology advances and more studies are conducted, animal stem cell therapy may be used to treat diseases such as diabetes, cancer or autoimmune diseases in pets.
